Why Medical Practitioners Need Proper Thyroid Shielding

Being a medical practitioner is extremely rewarding. You are personally responsible for the health and well-being of your patients. However, it is important that you don’t lose sight of your own health and well-being. One way to do this is to use proper protective equipment. This will protect your body from the harmful effects of radiation.

Today’s blog will focus on thyroid shielding. You may or may not be aware that your thyroid is amongst the areas of your body that is most susceptible to radiation induced cancer. As a medical practitioner you are constantly exposed to scatter radiation. Scatter radiation is a type of secondary radiation that occurs when radiation deflects off of an object back to your body. The object is typically a patient having a medical test. Without proper shielding, long term exposure to scatter radiation can be detrimental to your health and even lead to cancer.
